Tradition
has it that of the 8 Veeratta places, it is in Korukkai, the
Lord burnt the Cupid triggering lust in men and women. He is
known as Kamasamharamurthy, meaning the One who destroyed
Kama or sinful desires. The Lord is in a sitting position,
bending the left and leg placing it on the right, having the
left hand on the bent leg and showing the right hand
assuring the devotee of his prayers. |
It is also
noteworthy that all the places around Korukkai has a link with
this temple. For instance, Kanganamputhur is a place where the
Cupid (manmatha) vowed to disturb the penance of Shiva. Kanganam
in Tamil means taking a Vow for good or bad. Palakudi is the place
where the Lord drank milk. Villinoor is the place where the Lord
took the bow. It is said that the Cupid applied his arrow on the
Lord neither from the back nor from the front but from a hiding
side.
Korukkai is one
of the 8 Attaveeratta places from where the Lord did some heroic
deeds. It is here he destroyed the Cupid. There are Rathi-Manmatha
idols here. The presiding deity is a swayambu. There is a lotus
flower in the Avudayar (seat for the Linga). The holy water here
also is called Pasupathi theertham.
Besides the
Kadukkai tree, there is also another holy tree called
Aridhagivanam.
This is also the
place where Rishi Theerthavagu brought down the Ganga to bathe the
Lord. It is here the Lord burnt the Cupid who was then blessed by
the Lord in response to his apology. A temple known for its

History
While Lord Shiva
was in medidation the world could not bear the heat emanated from
his penance. The Devas approached Lord Muruga to disturb the Lord’s
concentration, which he refused. Finally, they approached Cupid
for the purpose, which, without realizing the consequences,
ventured to play with the Lord. His arrows fell on the Lord, who,
opening the eyes saw the Cupid and burnt him. His wife Rathi
begged the lord for his life. Answering her prayers, the Lord gave
Cupid his life and sent him to the world above called Devaloka. |
