People praying to Veeratteswarar conquer lust, gain physical and mental strength, cured of illness, initiation to deep medidation and all noblest gifts. They gain complete mental peace, employment opportunities, and development in business, promotion in jobs, settlement of marriage and children.

Prayer:

Devotees offer Kalyanamalai (marriage garland), clothing, abishek in milk, curd, turmeric powder, tender coconut, lime, honey, sandal etc. They can also feed the visiting devotees (annadhanam).
Tradition has it that of the 8 Veeratta places, it is in Korukkai, the Lord burnt the Cupid triggering lust in men and women. He is known as Kamasamharamurthy, meaning the One who destroyed Kama or sinful desires. The Lord is in a sitting position, bending the left and leg placing it on the right, having the left hand on the bent leg and showing the right hand assuring the devotee of his prayers.

It is also noteworthy that all the places around Korukkai has a link with this temple. For instance, Kanganamputhur is a place where the Cupid (manmatha) vowed to disturb the penance of Shiva. Kanganam in Tamil means taking a Vow for good or bad. Palakudi is the place where the Lord drank milk. Villinoor is the place where the Lord took the bow. It is said that the Cupid applied his arrow on the Lord neither from the back nor from the front but from a hiding side.

Korukkai is one of the 8 Attaveeratta places from where the Lord did some heroic deeds. It is here he destroyed the Cupid. There are Rathi-Manmatha idols here. The presiding deity is a swayambu. There is a lotus flower in the Avudayar (seat for the Linga). The holy water here also is called Pasupathi theertham.

Besides the Kadukkai tree, there is also another holy tree called Aridhagivanam.

This is also the place where Rishi Theerthavagu brought down the Ganga to bathe the Lord. It is here the Lord burnt the Cupid who was then blessed by the Lord in response to his apology. A temple known for its antiquity. Sung by Thirugnanasambadar, Appar and Sundarar. Situated in North of the Chola Kingdom.

Korukkai is 22 Km from Mayiladuthurai and 30 from Sirkali. Accomodation is available in Mayiladuthurai charges ranging from Rs. 250 to Rs. 500. In Naga;attinam, the district headquarters, Hotel Tamilnadu is available-phone No. 04365 – 22389.

Thirukorukkai is on the Mayiladuthurai-Manalmedu route, at a distance of 3 Kms. As conveyance facilities are not adequate, it is advised that the visitors take a taxi for the journey. The nearest railway station is Mayiladuthurai and airport Trichy.

Festivals:

Masi Magam – Kama Dhagana Vizha 10days during January February. Brahmmotsavam is celebrated in a grand manner. Thiruvadirai during December-January. Procession of deities. These are the important festivals. Navarathri and monthly pradoshas are very important. Deepavali, Pongal and Tamil and English New Year days are also observed.

History

While Lord Shiva was in medidation the world could not bear the heat emanated from his penance. The Devas approached Lord Muruga to disturb the Lord’s concentration, which he refused. Finally, they approached Cupid for the purpose, which, without realizing the consequences, ventured to play with the Lord. His arrows fell on the Lord, who, opening the eyes saw the Cupid and burnt him. His wife Rathi begged the lord for his life. Answering her prayers, the Lord gave Cupid his life and sent him to the world above called Devaloka.
