New York Tamil Sangam elects new president
NEW YORK: Dr Prakash M Swamy, a senior Indian-American journalist of New York was elected unanimously as president of New York Tamil Sangam (association), one of the oldest of its kind in the US. The executive committee of the association that met earlier this week decided to elect Dr. Swamy who served as its secretary between 2008 and 2010. The current president Mr. Albert Chelladurai’s term ends on Dec 31, 2010. Dr. Swamy who will assume charge in January 2011 will hold the post till end of 2013. Dr.Swamy, a native of Chennai, is an accredited diplomatic correspondent at the United Nations and also serves as only Indian-American judge of Emmy Awards in New York. He had worked in senior editorial positions in various Indian-American publications such as India Abroad, News India Times and The Urban Indian. In India, he was with The Hindu, India Today and Ananda Vikatan group of publications. The New York Tamil Sangam is a registered not-for-profit organization that promotes Tamil language, literature, culture, music, dance and heritage in the region for the past 40 years. It is also a charitable organization and helped construct a building for Tsunami affected children in Tamil Nadu; rendered assistance to victims and families of Gujarat earthquake and also World Trade Center terrorist attack. The association feed over 100 homeless and destitute in Staten Island, New York, every year during Tamil New Year’s Day (April 14). D. Vijayakumar was elected secretary, S Chidambaranathan as executive vice president, Dr Arul Veerappan as vice president, Edgar Rosario as joint secretary, Gayathri Murali Rajan as treasurer. - Dinamalar Reader Prakash M Swamy
