BRITS opportunity to star in a Bollywood blockbuster

May 21,2013  IST

Our Bollywood legend Pooja Bhatt has offered a role in her latest film to raise money to reduce violence against women in India. The highest bidder will be given the chance to star in a film to be screened to millions.

Pooja Bhatt, whose film focused on the controversial issue of female Infanticide in India, has starred in award-winning films such as Zakhm and Border, and has produced numerous films including Paap, starring John Abraham.

In December 2012 the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student in Delhi received international coverage and condemnation. Studies suggest sexual violence is rising in India.  In 2009 there were more than 2million incidents of violence against women in India, a 25% increase since 2004.

Research by Oxfam indicates that almost 40% of women have been abused by theirhusbands but very few women report incidents to the police.

The money raised from auctioning theBollywood role will be used by Oxfam in India to help eradicate violence against women. The project supports victims to report violence to end impunity and helps them to become financially independent.

Bhatt said: “Thank you for your very unique initiative. How could I not support an event that would contribute to protecting women and highlighting the issue of violence against women?”

“I would be delighted to offer a role either the film BAD which would be a speaking part Or they could win a part in my film Cabaret, where they will get to participate in an elaborate song sequence complete with colour, dancers and the works.” This event is being held in London on 23rd May to raise a great deal of money to support women and children projects around the world including Ms. Bhatt star auctionprize which is dedicated to women in India suffering violence.

The film role opportunity has been organised by Scottish Circle, brain child of Legendary Scottish singer Annie Lennox who has dedicated her life to charity work and has raised millions of pounds over the years and campaigned very actively for women rights. Scottish Circle is a group of influential women dedicated to raising money for disadvantaged women around the world, with a particular focus on Oxfam’s projects. Some key members of the Scottish Circle are Scottish Actress Daniela Nardini, Palestinian Actress-Lana Haj Yahia, BBC producer Paula Macgee, Award winning Business women Poonam Gupta and Rita Poddar.  With a truly international mix of women in a small country Scotland reaching out and touching lives of women in Pakistan, their home land and now India, it goes to show what can be achieved by handful of women if they reach out for it!
