Sri Lankan expats in Dubai bid farewell to the outgoing Consul General

In appreciation of the immense service rendered by Mr. Abdul Raheem, the outgoing Consul General, ten Sri Lankan organizations including Lanka Lions, Sri Lanka Business Council, SAHANA, CA-SL UAE Chapter, PIMA, SLQS organized a grand farewell reception in his honour on 30th July 2015 at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Deira Creek, Dubai. It was the first kind of farewell to an outgoing Sri Lankan Diplomat jointly organized by the Sri Lankan leading professionals and business groups in Dubai.

Mr. Devanand Mahadeva, Chainman/Sri Lanka Business Council delivered the welcome speech and remarked the excellent support rendered by the outgoing Consul General in promoting Sri Lanka’s  trade, investment and tourism between the two friendly countries. Representatives from each organization spoke at the event, commended the excellent services rendered by Abdul Raheem and his staff in Dubai to the destitute Sri Lankan migrant workers and the promotional campaign initiated by him in the field of tourism and culture. 

Many of the speakers were highly praised the Sri Lankan Diplomat who had maintained the close working relations with the Sri Lankan community, UAE officials and the diplomatic community in Dubai and Northern Emirates. It is well received by the audience that this kind of overwhelming farewell reception was not given to any Sri Lankan diplomat in the history of their lifetime in Dubai and Northern Emirates by the Sri Lankan expat community.

Mr. Abdul Raheem speaking at the occasion thanked whole heartedly the sincere appreciation expressed by all the speakers. He mentioned that it was an opportunity provided to him to serve the motherland and the people of Sri Lanka in Dubai and Northern Emirates.  He further said that it was a difficult task and he has to overcome various difficulties with the continuous support and cooperation and the friendly working relations that he maintained with the government officials, political authorities and the well wishers. During his speech Abdul Raheem recalled his past experience in Dubai with various Sri Lankan community organizations and the progressive achievement in promoting Sri Lankan values in the vibrant city of Dubai among multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-language foreign expats, UAE nationals and the Diplomatic community. After stint of 4 years stay in Dubai, Abdul Raheem was emotional to say ‘Good Bye’ to Sri Lankan friends and wished them all success in their future endeavors.

Mr Ranil de Silva, President/Lanka Lion delivered the vote of thanks. To remember this memorable occasion, on behalf of Sri Lankan expats, Mr Suren Swaminathan, Past President/Lanka Lion presented the outgoing Consul General with a souvenir of land marks in Dubai.
