Chennai: All the college officials disappeared from the campus as the committee set up by the state to monitor instances of engineering colleges demanding higher fees than the Govt. prescribed marauded Panimalar Institute of Technology and Panimalar Engineering College at Ponamallee.

As the committee had received complaints from students and parents that fees higher than what government norms prescribed were being demanded, the committee made a surprise visit.

After a cry raised by a student’s father, the committee entered the college that was demanding Rs. 5 lakh as fees and asked us to do something, said A. Ramasamy, Vice-Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, who is part of the committee.

Around 3.30 p.m., Mr. Ramasamy, along with S. Bhaskaran, member secretary, TANSCHE, also a committee member, S. Ganesan, Director of Student Affairs, Anna University; A.M. Rafiq, Special Officer, Directorate of Technical Education and G. Paneerselvam, senior liaison officer, Directorate of Technical Education, entered the college campus.

Mr. Ramasamy said, The Principal, Vice-Principal, Admissions Officer, and other officials ran away when they came to understand about the investigation committee visits. He added that when the team entered the office room, there was only one attender available. He told us everyone had gone, said Mr. Ramasamy.

Even after numerous attempts made to contact the Principal, the Admissions Officer and others concerned with the college's administration through landline and cell phones, they were unable to contact, he said.

The committee spent nearly two and half-hours in the campus, but no officials turned up.

Now the committee would issue a show cause notice to the college authorities as to why action should not be taken against them for refusing to show documents relating to admissions for verification, Mr. Ramasamy said.

If it was proved that higher fees were being demanded, the committee would inform the university, which would take action against the college stopping admissions to the first year and disaffiliate the institute, he said.

Students and parents could inform the committee about any demands for higher fees or capitation fees from engineering colleges by calling 28440961, he said.
