Deepavali celebrations at Australian Federal Parliament Canberra

The Hindu Council of Australia, in association with the Hon Coleman MP, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs and Senator the Hon Zed Seselja Assistant Minister for Treasury and Finance, celebrated Deepawali festival with the Australian Indian community in the Great Hall of the Federal Parliament House in Canberra on Monday December 3, 2018.

 

Deepavali is truly an Indian festival and a social affair, an occasion to reconnect the local Indian community and is full of fun, food and entertainment. Deepavali is becoming a universal festival. Every state and territory in Australia rejoice in this festival of Lights for Deepavali.

 

Function started at 6.30 pm, and masters of ceremony were Sangeetha Raman and Santosh Gupta. Mr Prakash Mehta, President of Hindu Council of Australia welcomed the Chief guests and attendees.

 

Australian Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (Representing Prime Minister of Australia), the Hon David Coleman talked about Deepavali and its significance in Australia.

 

Leader of the opposition the Hon Bill Shorten MP gave a special speech about the significance of Deepavali. He acknowledged Deepavali enriches the life of our nation (Australia), it brings light to our country (Australia) every year;

 

He said, “I met the President of India during his historic visit to Australia a couple of weeks ago. I said to him that the greatest strength of the Australia-India relationship is the Indian-Australian diaspora who call Australia home’;

 

He also said his party will be elected to government in about 24 weeks, and that he promised the President of India he would “seek to elevate Australia and India’s friendship into a more comprehensive strategic and economic relationship”;

 

He mentioned his vision for our growing relationship and as a reflection of this promised to institute more direct air services between Australia and India.  He also mentioned he wanted to provide greater educational and cultural exchange for students from both nations”;

 

He wished all true wealth of peace, prosperity, health and happiness in the future.

 

The Hon Zed Saselja, Assistant Minister for Treasury and Finance; The Hon Julian Leeser MP, Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of India and the Indian High Commissioner, Dr A.M. Gondane talked about Deepavali.

 

Classical Kuchpudi dance, Rajasthani dance, Kathak dance, Garbha dance and Tandav dance were performed by artists from all over Australia.

 

Mr Santosh Gupta thanked all who attended and made the event successful.

 

More than 400 Indian community members attended the function.
