Evenings are always special! Especially the gentleness of this evening, with the loud noises of Indian music, the lovely men around the colorful and beautiful Indian ladies with kids, the mesmerizing aroma of the dishes, Sky lighted with colorful fireworks….Wow !!!

Every Year San Antonio celebrates the City Diwali in Downtown San Antonio with all festivities. In this year Diwali celebrations not only Indians but Americans, Mexicans and other nationality people also participated with their families to the astonishment of all.

Around 35,000 people participated in this year’s city Diwali which was celebrated in Hemisfair Park on 02 Nov 19 from 4PM in the evening till midnight ending with a beautiful colorful fireworks to light the San Antonio skies. It was a sight to watch the people from different regions of India performing traditional dances in their colorful dresses. Lot of stalls were erected to promote the sale of dresses, ornaments, face paintings, Mehndi, the proceeds contributing to noble causes.

There were lots of food stalls selling different delicious mouth watering chat and food items to the delight of all. On one corner the Bollywood DJ music was filling the air making the people twist their hips, jump on their toes and dance merrily. The whole environment was electrifying.

There were many beautiful decorated barges on the river in which people belonging to different states in India wore their traditional dresses and singing their local language songs danced joyfully.  This year’s city Diwali celebrations were honored by the San Antonio City Mayor and Arun Gandhi (Grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Father of India). I was fortunate enough to meet, greet and talk to Arun Gandhi during this occasion in the midst of loud music and dance.

The credit of successful Diwali celebrations goes to Anuja SA, a non-profit organization who planned for months and laid out this mega event so meticulously. We need to take a pause and convey our sincere thanks to Dr.Vish, Mrs.Kausi Subramaniam and other organizing committee members for their hard work in putting together this mega event and make it a success year after year.

Every year all the San Antonio Indians look forward to this Diwali Celebration anxiously.
