Dunedin Tamil Society(DTS) hosted another successful annual Deepavali celebrations at Taieri bowling club hall, November 7, 2020. This year, the event was attended by over 200 people, with guests coming from all around New Zealand. Guests of honour were Mrs Ingrid Leary, MP Taieri and Mr Mike Lord, Councillor, Dunedin City Council, both of whom delivered heartfelt speeches. MP Ingrid Leary also launched our DTS website(https://dunedintamilsociety.org.nz/). We had a number of great performances, covering music and dance as well as a special performance from Dunedin Nepalese Society. The variety spectrum was broad, with solo and group performances by participants of all age groups from 3 to 50 years! The audience were kept engaged with the number of fun games in between the performances. The event was brought to an elegant close with a sumptuous dinner (South Indian cuisine), prepared by volunteers and committee members, and was a huge success once again. The main chef arrived from Hamilton to assist with the meal preparation, which included a selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The event was a grand success when asked to comment, the event coordinator and President Dr Niv Kamal said that the committee started planning for the event months ago, and required the time and assistance from multiple volunteers both within the committee and from the wide members of our society. Thanks to our main sponsors, Otago Community Trust & Lottery grants board, and our co-sponsors, Mike Pero, Dunedin discount tyres, George Cars, Gravity Events, Southern City Taxis, True value cars, Indian save mart, A-Z Cuts, Knox cafe & Bakery and our media partners, Indian Newslink and Dinamalar, for helping us organize the event with such grandeur.

The purpose for such a grand event was to pass on the heritage and richness of the Tamil culture to the next generation of children who otherwise don’t have the opportunity to celebrate the Deepavali in a land away from the home country. DTS will continue to promote Tamil language and culture in and around Dunedin through similar events and hosting activities that engage the community.
