Tamil Cultural Society’s 30th Anniversary Celebrations in Australian Capital

May 10,2022

The 30th Anniversary celebratory event, 'AndrumIndrumEndrum' (AIE), held on 7-May-2022 Saturday evening at Melrose High School, Canberra was a resounding success.

The event marked 30 years of the Australian Tamil Cultural Society’s contribution to Canberra’s multicultural community. Since its inception, ATCS has been showcasing Tamil language, heritage, and cultural values through various channels.

The objective for the event was to have a fun and entertaining evening marking a return to pre-covid day and providing the community members an opportunity to mingle and socialise. The event was very well attended drawing a crowd of over 275 people.

Nearly 65 performers from 18 performances traversed various aspects of the rich Tamil culture. The event was kickstarted by acknowledging the Ngunnawal country & its people, the traditional custodians of the land where we all are meeting. Resonating the same in the Tamil culture, a traditional Indian lighting of lamps was carried out by prominent women of the Tamil community.

Tamil thaivazhuthu, an invocatory song to the Tamil goddess was sung by all. ShravanMadanraj sang the full version of the song which was a surprise for the audience. Students from Chennai Tamil School showed their prowess and grasp of the Tamil language that they have been learning under the guidance of volunteer teachers.

A tableau from Mandir School of Music explained the importance of Tamil New Year. Other programs included traditional Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi performances, karaoke songs and fusion dances. The grand finale was a break dance performance by members of Project One dance group.

The Masters of the Ceremony were the six young members of ATCS who looked resplendent in their traditional dresses and spoke eloquently in both English and Tamil.

A rolling slide presentation showed snapshots from the past cultural and sports activities conducted by the ATCS.

The Tamil Society and the organising committee received loads of compliments from the community, many accolades from multicultural leaders and forums and appreciation from the dignitaries who attended the event.

His Excellency Mr Suneet Mehta, Deputy High Commissioner of India to Australia, noted in his speech “the immense contribution made by the Tamil diaspora to Australian economy and Australian society, is deeply appreciated by all Australians. The AIE event represents the best of Southern India’s and Australia’s inclusive traditions. I am happy to see this wonderful display of Tamil's rich cultural diversity in conjunction with the multicultural ethos of Australia. Congratulations to all and hard work put in place by the committee members.”

The Hon Mr David Smith MP, Federal Member for Bean, spoke about the excellent relations between India and Australia, and the significant contribution of the Tamil diaspora. Congratulations to all.

Ms Maddy Northam, Senate candidate, appreciated the significance of the event, congratulated the organisers.

Ms Suzanne Orr, MLA for Yerrabi representing Ms Tara Cheyne, the ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs noted “this event is the reflection of the extraordinary relationship between the Tamil members and Australia, and how wonderful it is to come together to celebrate that relationship and bonding between the two. Congratulations to the organisers”.

All in all, it was a fun filled night of celebration, reminiscing and socialising with each other along with a sumptuous dinner served to all.

The event concluded with a wish to all mothers of the community 'A Happy Mother's Day'.
