Delhi: The Bar Council of India (BCI) has taken significant strides over the past three years to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the legal profession.
In its efforts to create an inclusive environment within law schools, the BCI now mandates that institutions seeking approval for their law programs must comply with rigorous accessibility standards.
These requirements include the installation of ramps, lifts, and other essential facilities to accommodate students with physical disabilities.
Additionally, law schools are obligated to provide accessible learning materials such as Braille books and digital resources, ensuring full participation for students with visual impairments.
The BCI's commitment to fostering inclusivity is further reflected in its monitoring practices, which involve periodic inspections and feedback mechanisms to ensure continuous improvement of facilities and services for disabled students.
The council has also directed all Centres of Legal Education to enhance their physical and academic infrastructure, making provisions for the effective participation of disabled students, teachers, and staff.
This includes the construction of ramps, installation of elevators with auditory signals, and the incorporation of Braille symbols.
Furthermore, the BCI adheres to the Equal Opportunity Policy as mandated under Section 21 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
By ensuring there is no differential treatment in legal education and profession, the council reinforces its commitment to equal opportunities for all candidates, including those with disabilities.
