Chennai: Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has announced that climate education will be incorporated into the curriculum of all schools in Tamil Nadu, with eco zones to be established on campuses.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the Climate Summit in Nandambakkam, Chennai, CM Stalin emphasized the urgent need for awareness and adaptation to climate change. The two-day conference is being organized by the Department of Environment and Climate Change.
Highlighting the impact of climate change, he cited recent landslides in Wayanad and Tiruvannamalai as examples of its growing consequences. He stressed the importance of educating students on environmental issues, stating that environmental forums will be introduced in schools to foster awareness from an early age.
Additionally, the government plans to provide climate change training to officials. A comprehensive climate policy will soon be announced, ensuring that knowledge on environmental sustainability reaches all sections of society through students. CM Stalin also reiterated the state's commitment to supporting those affected by extreme weather events, mentioning the existing ₹4 lakh relief provision for heatwave-related fatalities.
Addressing concerns over balancing economic growth with environmental conservation, he assured that the government is taking proactive steps, including utilizing state disaster funds to set up ORS stations, hydration points, and shaded areas to combat heat-related issues.
"We must build a society that values and conserves natural resources," he concluded.
