Chennai: IIT Madras and CMC Vellore have jointly developed PLUTO, a cost-effective, indigenous robotic solution for hand rehabilitation, now commercialized by Thryv Rehab Solutions.

The Plug-and-Train device, patented and portable, offers advanced therapy for conditions like stroke, spinal cord injuries, and Parkinson's disease.

PLUTO's modular design enables adaptive therapy for various hand movements, ensuring precise rehabilitation with real-time feedback. Tested in Indian homes, it has already benefitted over 1,000 patients across 11 clinics in the past four years, including routine therapy sessions at CMC Vellore.

“This innovation bridges the gap in affordable rehabilitation devices, offering accessible therapy at home or bedside,” said Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan, Head of the TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research, IIT Madras.

The robot's affordability and portability reduce dependency on caregivers and financial strain on patients.

The collaboration, facilitated by IIT Madras' Technology Transfer Office, underscores the impact of academic research on healthcare. “PLUTO's success exemplifies sustainable healthcare innovation,” noted Prof. Sivakumar Balasubramanian of CMC Vellore.

Compact and scalable, PLUTO's gearless design and modular tools support diverse therapy needs, marking a transformative step in rehabilitation technology for clinical and home settings.
