India is making significant strides in artificial intelligence (AI) through strategic government initiatives aimed at fostering innovation and self-reliance. Under the IndiaAI Mission, the country is developing a robust AI ecosystem with advanced computing infrastructure, indigenous AI models, and AI-integrated digital platforms.
With an investment of ₹10,300 crore over five years, the mission is establishing a high-performance computing facility featuring 18,693 GPUs. In its initial phase, 10,000 GPUs have been deployed, strengthening India's AI capabilities. An open GPU marketplace has also been introduced, ensuring affordable access to startups and researchers, promoting AI inclusivity.
The government is prioritizing AI solutions tailored to India's unique needs. BharatGen, the world's first government-funded multimodal large language model (LLM) initiative, is set to transform public services. Additionally, the Digital India BHASHINI project facilitates AI-driven language translation, while Sarvam-1 is an advanced LLM designed for Indian languages.
To accelerate AI innovation, India has established Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities. The 2025 Union Budget has allocated ₹500 crore for a fourth CoE focused on AI in education.
India's AI talent base is growing rapidly, ranking first globally in AI skill penetration. With AI adoption increasing across industries, the demand for AI professionals is expected to reach one million by 2026, further solidifying India's position as a global AI powerhouse.
By integrating AI with digital public infrastructure and adopting a balanced regulatory approach, India is paving the way for technological self-reliance and economic growth. With these initiatives, the country is poised to become a leader in AI innovation, driving transformative change across industries and governance.
