Chennai: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, over 1,000 police officers conducted coordinated raids in Chengalpattu, a suburb of Chennai, early yesterday.

The operation, led by Tambaram Additional Commissioner Maheshwari, resulted in the arrest of 21 individuals, including a local Dhaba owner linked to drug sales.

The raids targeted residences of both foreign and local students, particularly in Guduvanchery and Potheri, areas known for drug issues.

Police searched 500 homes, inspected vehicles, and seized narcotics including 500 grams of ganja, six ganja chocolates, 20 ml of ganja oil, eight hookahs or caleans, and six kilograms of hock powder.

Authorities are investigating the origins of these drugs and the identities of their suppliers.

Twenty cases have been filed, and 60 unclaimed vehicles are under scrutiny.

The crackdown follows complaints about drug use near Potheri Lake and a murder linked to drug disputes last year. Public reports indicate ongoing drug sales in various localities.

In a separate case, Guduvancheri police arrested Selvamani, 29, seizing 2.25 kilograms of ganja. Police continue their efforts to curb drug trafficking and enhance community safety.
