Hyderabad: India is gearing up to introduce the sixth generation of wireless communication, or 6G technology, by 2030, according to Kiran Kuchi, professor and telecommunication researcher at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad.
The global telecommunications sector typically sees a new wireless standard every decade. While 5G—introduced in India in 2022—remains in active use, work is already underway to define and develop 6G. At IIT Hyderabad, Kuchi is leading research efforts that position India not just as a consumer but also as a global contributor to this next-generation technology.
“Globally, work on 6G began in 2021. By 2029, the standards are expected to be finalized, and by 2030, the technology will be rolled out,” he said.
Highlighting India's growing role, he added, “The last decade of research and investment in telecommunications is now paying off. India will no longer be just a user—it will emerge as a provider and standard setter for 6G globally.”
Unlike 5G, 6G networks will integrate artificial intelligence at their core. According to Kuchi, IIT Hyderabad researchers have already developed chips for the technology, which promises ultra-fast speeds and transformative applications.
“From autonomous vehicles and agriculture to smart factories, schools, hospitals, security, and disaster relief, 6G will redefine connectivity and user experience,” he said.
With this, India aims to leap ahead in telecommunications, making its mark on the global stage of next-generation wireless innovation.
