Guwahati: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the BJP-led government in Assam, on Thursday launched its students' wing to mobilise the youth towards regional politics as well as strengthen the party's organisational base.

Students and the youth are aware about political developments and it is necessary to involve them in such matters concerning day to day life, AGP president and Agriculture Minister Atul Bora said.

"Formation of the students' wing - Asom Chatra Parishad - was the need of the hour to mobilise the youth of the state towards regional politics. The party workers came up with a unanimous decision to form this outfit.

"We want to inspire the youth towards regionalism for the greater interest of the people of the state," Bora told reporters here.

Asked about the need for a new students wing when the All Assam Students' Union already exists, Bora said, "AASU is a non-political organisation. Therefore, the body has to stay away from politics."

Trinayan Baruah was elected as the president of the Asom Chatra Parishad.
