The ratio of a student actually making into an IIT seemed to be 1:48 and for students who applied for a B.Com degree at some top city colleges, the ratio was equally the same.

Adding that B.Com has remained the most popular course for city students over past 30 years, Nirmala Prasad, the principal of MOP Vaishnav College says that just as all science students head towards BE degree, so anyone from the commerce stream will certainly want to opt for B.Com degree.

A statistics from few leading city college reflects on competitiveness and popularity of the course. This year Madras Christian College has received over 3,000 applications for just 70 seats. At DG Vaishnav College, 6,000 students are competing for 210 seats. At Ethiraj College, over 4,000 applicants are being considered for 140 seats.

With a leading college planning to start a third B.Com section this year, offering a specialty in Computer Applications, the first of its kind under the University of Madras, the Head of the Commerce Department from the popular women’s college says that the interest in B.Com is only growing. This year, the college has received 20 per cent more applications.
