New Delhi: With salary offers as high as Rs 5 lakh per annum, and jobs that only multiply every year, the undergraduate courses in foreign languages can prove to be a good choice for students looking for a seat in DU this year.

The Delhi University offers  BA (honours) courses in French, German, Spanish and Italian.   DU's Department of Germanic and Romance studies runs a three-year degree course in four languages. The admission courses are conducted through a single entrance test — to be held on June 18 this year.
After completing the course, students attract fat salary offers from multinational companies operating in tourism sector besides KPOs and BPOs. Above all the current phase of recession has hardly affected the demand.

M S Joshi, associate professor in the department, said, ‘'Our students get salary packages for anything between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 5 lakh on completion of the course. The situation may not be different this year as we are already getting requests from companies for hiring our students.'

'We get mails from companies and private institutions who want translators or teachers in one of these four languages. Often, the demand is more than supply,'Joshi remarked.

The competition to get into these courses is tough. The department expects around 2,500 applications for just 34 seats in each of the four courses. But the good news is that anyone with at least 45% aggregate marks can apply.

For admission, 70% weightage will be given to the aggregate in class XII while the rest 30% will go to the performance in the entrance test. The application form for applying to the courses will be available till June 15 from the department on the north campus.

Joshi said, 'The entrance exam will test the aptitude of students for learning a language. There may be questions on general awareness and also essay questions to test their command over the language in which it is written.'
