Puducherry: Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has produced more than 18,000 medical professionals so far, Director Veersingh Negi said on Tuesday.
Addressing the 14th convocation ceremony, Negi said the institute has made steady progress in medical education, patient care, research, infrastructure development and social outreach. He noted that JIPMER ranked fourth in the medical category in the NIRF rankings 2025 and second among MBBS-offering medical institutions in the India Today rankings 2025. The institute has also received the FICCI Healthcare Excellence Award.
Negi said JIPMER functions as a major tertiary referral centre for South India and other states, treating lakhs of outpatients and thousands of inpatients annually, including emergency cases and surgeries. The institute provides advanced diagnostics, organ transplant programmes and free or low-cost treatment for the poor.
He added that major projects, including an accident and rehabilitation centre and a multi-organ transplant centre at Sedarapet in Puducherry, are in the pipeline. JIPMER is currently undertaking 218 research projects worth Rs 119 crore in collaboration with national and international partners, he said.
