Chennai: Engineering and medicine should work in close interaction to develop new medicines, consumables, devices and treatment process to provide affordable healthcare to all people in a democratic manner, said Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras while delivering the convocation address at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research here. Citing the covid experience he said India not only developed two vaccines for the world, administered it to 146 crore people and exported to needy countries but also quickly produced indigenous ventilators to save valuable lives.
There is an urgent need to establish an Indian School of Medicine and treatment process that has international acceptance.
We also have to develop indigenous medical devices which are now imported at a huge cost.
Today most of the medical devices are digitised and produce a lot of data which if understood and interpreted can revolutionise health care. India is sitting on a gold mine of such data.  Therefore doctors and medical students should take a deep interest in data science.  UGC is now permitting students to pursue dual degrees and doctors and medical students should take up diploma or other courses in data science online or offline, he added.
The IIT Director also appealed to medical students to have a strong interest in research.
He pointed out that though Indian systems of medicine like siddha are very effective in individual cases and provide basic immunity instead of merely treating the symptoms they do not have universal acceptance because of lack of scientific validation.
He also gave away 45 gold medals to meritorious students.
Shruti N. Iyer got 3 gold medals in MBBS.
The Chancellor Mr.V.R.Venkataachalam conferred the degrees and distributed the certificates.  The Pro Chancellor Mr.R.V.Sengutuvan graced the occasion.
In his report the Vice Chancellor Dr. P.V. Vijayaraghavan said three new M.Sc courses in the faculty of Allied Health Sciences in forensic science and cardiovascular science and clinical embryology and four new certificate courses in sports and exercise sciences specialising in the areas of sports related nutrition, physiotherapy, psychology, strength and conditioning were started last year. This year two certificate courses will be started in health professional education. In research inter disciplinary thematic clusters are doing collaborative research with high volume grants from national and international agencies. More than 90 research projects are being undertaken with extra mural support with grants of over Rs.54 crores with women engaged in 75 percent of these projects as principle investigators or co-investigators, he added.
