Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government is considering the inclusion of millet-based dishes, including those prepared using foxtail millet, in the menu served under the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme, Social Welfare Minister Geetha Jeevan said during a review meeting.

The proposal came up for discussion at a meeting held at the Secretariat on Thursday to review the implementation of food supply schemes being executed by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation for the Social Welfare Department, according to an official release.

During the meeting, the minister stressed the need to make the breakfast menu more appealing to children while ensuring that the food served is nutritious and of high quality.

She also directed officials to ensure that ingredients such as rice and chickpeas are properly cooked before being served under the scheme.

The meeting further decided that food supplies for government-run old-age homes should be procured through the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation.

Officials also discussed adding millet-based dishes, including those made from foxtail millet, to the existing breakfast menu as part of efforts to improve the nutritional value of meals served under the scheme, the release added.
