To legally work in the Solomon Islands, Indian citizens must obtain a Work Permit and a corresponding visa. Here's an overview of the process and requirements:
Step-by-Step Procedure
Job Offer and Employer Sponsorship
Obtain a confirmed job offer from a Solomon Islands-based employer. The employer will usually sponsor your work permit application by demonstrating the need for a foreign worker due to lack of local expertise.
Application Submission
Both employer and employee must complete the Work Permit application forms.
The application must include copies of passport, employment contract, educational certificates, CV, police clearance, and medical examination report.
Documentation of the employer's business registration and evidence of attempts to recruit locally are required.
Residency and Work Permits
Separate permits are required for entry, residence, and employment and need to be applied from the Director of Immigration.
Applicants must be outside Solomon Islands when applying for a new permit.
Visa applications must satisfy health and character requirements.
Fees and Processing Time
Work permit application fee is around USD 200 plus additional approval fees based on the permit validity (from 3 months to over 24 months).
Processing time typically ranges from 7 days (for investors) to 14 days (for foreign workers).
Approval or Rejection
On approval, the permit is registered and processed, then forwarded to Immigration Director for final issuance.
If rejected, applicants may appeal within 14 days. An appeal fee applies.
Work Visa Issuance
After work permit approval, apply for the work visa at a Solomon Islands diplomatic mission or on arrival, to legally enter and work in the Solomon Islands.
Important Notes
A valid passport with at least 6 months validity is required to apply.
Applicants must have clean police records and medical clearance.
Employment contracts must be clear about salary and terms.
Work permits are employer-specific; changing employer requires a new permit.
