What is the role of military scientists?
The armed forces are the backbone of a nation's security. Military scientists play a crucial role in developing weapons, missiles, and defense equipment at DRDO. Their work extends beyond the military, supporting paramilitary forces like the CRPF by providing advanced technology, including unmanned drones.

How has Dr. Abdul Kalam influenced your journey?
That's a great question! Dr. Kalam is the reason I became a military scientist. I first learned about this career because of him. After completing my engineering degree, I came across his book Agni Siragugal in a library. Normally, we just flip through books, but this one changed my life. As I read, I dreamed of becoming like him—and I worked hard to make that dream come true.

What steps should students take to become military scientists?
DRDO conducts the Scientist Entry Test (SET) annually. Candidates who pass the exam proceed to an interview, and those who clear both stages are recruited as military scientists. To be eligible, students must have a master's degree in engineering, medicine, or science. There are also prerequisite exams required to qualify for the SET.

Can you tell us about the Military College in Pune?
DRDO has established the Defense Institute of Advanced Technology in Pune, where military scientists receive training for several months. The program goes beyond classroom instruction, providing hands-on experience with fighter jets, warships, submarines, and military tanks. This field offers excellent career prospects for those passionate about defense research.

What is the contribution of women in defense science?
Women play a significant role in various defense fields, including missile research, submarine testing, and artillery development. One of DRDO's most renowned scientists, Tessy Thomas, was the project director of the Agni missile program. There is no gender barrier in defense science—women can thrive in any sector.

What should school students do if they aspire to be military scientists?
Students should actively participate in science competitions, which help sharpen their problem-solving skills. Academic performance alone should not define a student's potential—teachers and parents must encourage curiosity beyond textbooks. Reading widely and thinking critically are the first steps toward becoming a scientist.

Could you share an unknown fact about Dr. Abdul Kalam?
Dr. Kalam's vision always amazed me. He often said, “There is no such thing as an unimportant person—we must recognize and utilize their potential.” He was the driving force behind India's ambitious project to manufacture 50 missiles simultaneously. His contributions extended beyond defense, bringing technological advancements to everyday life.

Is DRDO developing mosquito repellents?
Yes! DRDO doesn't just create weapons—it also develops life-saving products. One such innovation is DEPA, a mosquito repellent designed to protect soldiers. This product is also available to the public. Additionally, DRDO has developed a dissolvable mosquito-killing tablet that, when sprinkled into water bodies, prevents mosquito breeding for over a week.

DRDO has developed weapons using chili. Can you explain?
India is home to one of the world's spiciest chilies, Bhut Jolokia. Using its properties, DRDO has created a non-lethal weapon called Capsicum Spray. When sprayed on an opponent, it causes intense irritation to the eyes and skin, making it an effective tool for neutralizing threats, including terrorists.

How many DRDO laboratories are there in India?
There are around 50 DRDO laboratories across India, each specializing in different fields. For example, Bangalore—considered the aviation hub of India—houses a dedicated aerospace laboratory.

What is the I-TEX program of the Defense Department?
The Innovate to Excel (I-TEX) program aims to advance research in the defense sector. It encourages industrial companies to undertake innovative security-related projects. Young researchers can also participate, with funding support of up to ₹10 crore.

Are there opportunities for defense startups?
Absolutely! DRDO offers a Technology Development Fund to support startups. Budding innovators can submit their ideas through the DRDO website to receive funding and mentorship.

Does DRDO organize any competitions for aspiring scientists?
Yes, DRDO conducts the Dare to Dream competition annually in memory of Dr. Abdul Kalam. Anyone over 18 can participate—there are no academic restrictions or language barriers. Winners receive cash prizes and the opportunity to collaborate with DRDO scientists.

What is your role at DRDO?
A nation aspiring to be a global superpower must have the capability to produce its own fighter jet engines. I am involved in the research and development of these advanced engines, which is a highly challenging but rewarding task.

How can higher education students become military scientists?
Students pursuing Aeronautical or Rocket Engineering can apply for scholarships through the JEE exam. DRDO's university in Pune offers postgraduate courses like M.Tech and Ph.D. in defense-related fields.

How advanced is India in defense technology?
India is making rapid strides in science and technology. We are among the seven nations capable of producing modern fighter jets, six nations with nuclear-powered submarines, and five nations with ballistic missile defense technology. India is also home to the world's fastest supersonic cruise missile—BrahMos.

Is India exporting military equipment?
Developing a fighter aircraft takes about 15 years, as it must undergo rigorous testing before deployment. India's BrahMos missile has already been exported to the Philippines, marking a significant achievement in defense exports.

What is the significance of fifth-generation fighter aircraft?
Fifth-generation fighter jets are the future of aerial combat. These advanced aircraft outperform their predecessors in speed, stealth, and technology. Global discussions are underway on their development, and Indian researchers and startups are actively engaged in this cutting-edge research.

What is your favorite place in Bangalore?
The DRDO residential area in C.V. Raman Nagar is my personal paradise. Its lush greenery and wide roads offer a peaceful environment, where I have found solutions to many scientific challenges.

What advice do you have for young people?
I call today's youth the touchscreen generation—they have advanced technology at their fingertips. My advice is simple: Don't waste time. Use technology wisely and work toward your dreams.

Why is National Science Day celebrated?
Since 1987, National Science Day has been observed annually to encourage scientific thinking among students and promote innovation. Each year, it is celebrated with a different theme. This year's theme is "Guiding the Youth Toward Global Technological Leadership", aligning with India's vision of becoming a developed nation.

National Science Day is celebrated on February 28th in honor of the renowned scientist from Tamil Nadu, Sir C.V. Raman. His discovery of the Raman Effect brought global recognition to India and earned him the Nobel Prize in 1930.
