Technology is not a threat but an enabler of growth, says Narayana Murthy, urging institutions to embrace innovation and the National Education Policy (NEP) for a brighter future.
Implementing the New Education Policy
The National Education Policy (NEP), formulated after extensive research by academicians and experts, presents a transformative vision for the education system. Educational institutions must recognize its long-term benefits and implement it effectively to enhance learning outcomes and career prospects.
Technology and Job Creation
The fear that technology will replace jobs is unfounded. Historically, advancements in technology have led to more job opportunities rather than fewer. In sectors like banking and healthcare, automation has streamlined processes while creating high-skilled employment.
Citing an example from the 1980s, Murthy recalled that when the British government introduced computers in banks, employee unions protested. However, with the intervention of academic experts from institutions like Cambridge, Oxford, and Manchester, workers understood that technology fosters job creation. Similarly, in India, the introduction of computers in 1984 significantly expanded employment in the banking sector.
“Technology is a catalyst for growth, benefiting not just specific industries but society as a whole,” he emphasized.
Learning from the Best
Murthy stressed the importance of research and innovation in educational institutions. While India may not yet have produced a global tech giant like Google, there is no cause for concern. Instead, he urged aspiring innovators to learn from the best, respect pioneers, and cultivate a mindset of humility and perseverance.
"If we continue to work diligently and embrace innovation, India will one day lead the world in technological advancements," he concluded.
