In a move aimed at ensuring the safety of students and teachers, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has amended the accreditation conditions for schools, making it mandatory to install CCTV cameras on their premises.

Across the country, nearly 28,000 CBSE-affiliated schools, including around 580 in Tamil Nadu, educate more than two crore students. Considering the safety and security of such a large student community, the CBSE has directed all schools to install high-capacity CCTV cameras in all areas frequently used by students, such as entrances, exits, classrooms, and corridors—while strictly excluding toilet areas to protect privacy.

This initiative has been implemented following the recommendations of the National Committee for Child Welfare and Protection. It is regarded as a crucial step towards improving safety standards within educational institutions. The move is expected to curb various forms of daily misconduct, including misbehavior towards children, acts of violence, petty quarrels between students, and incidents of bullying or intimidation.

Experts note that the presence of CCTV cameras will also encourage discipline and self-control among students, as they become aware that their activities are being monitored. Such surveillance will contribute to creating a more respectful and secure learning environment across campuses.

Video footage from these cameras often serves as critical evidence in police investigations and helps establish the truth in cases of disputes or incidents.
