At the same time, many are being misled by attractive advertisements and middlemen operating as “education consultants”. Therefore, it is essential to carefully examine the quality and credibility of an institution before taking admission.

With the Class 12 results of both the Central Board of Secondary Education and State Boards now released, thousands of students and parents are in the process of selecting colleges and academic programmes.

However, several private colleges continue to attract admissions through exaggerated placement claims, aggressive advertisements and agents posing as counsellors. Students must first ensure that the college and its programmes are approved by relevant bodies such as All India Council for Technical Education, University Grants Commission and Pharmacy Council of India. Rankings and accreditations such as NIRF, NAAC and NBA are also important indicators of quality.

2. Assess faculty strength and quality
The real strength of an educational institution lies in its teachers. Students must check whether the college has qualified and experienced permanent faculty members and whether the teacher-student ratio is adequate.

3. Personally inspect infrastructure
Students should not rely only on brochures or website photographs. Visiting the campus and inspecting laboratories, libraries, classrooms, hostels and internet facilities is extremely important.

4. Examine placement claims carefully
Advertisements promising “100 per cent placements” should not be accepted blindly. Students should verify average salary packages, the number of students placed and the companies participating in campus recruitment.

5. Ensure fee transparency
All fees, including tuition, hostel and other charges, should be clearly disclosed. Cash transactions without receipts and demands for donations or capitation fees must be avoided.

6. Evaluate academic environment and discipline
A good college should focus on academic quality, discipline, student guidance and skill development. Students should also verify whether examinations are conducted properly and regularly.

7. Check industry exposure and skill training
In today's world, textbook knowledge alone is insufficient. Institutions should provide internships, industrial training, skill development programmes and startup support opportunities.

8. Seek feedback from alumni
The true quality of a college is reflected in the achievements of its alumni. Students should interact with former and current students to gather genuine feedback.

9. Prioritise safety and student welfare
Facilities such as anti-ragging mechanisms, women's safety measures, counselling centres and hostel monitoring systems are essential for a healthy educational atmosphere.

10. Choose courses based on interest and aptitude
Students should never choose a course because of social pressure or others' opinions. Decisions must be based on personal interest, capability and long-term career goals.
