Many students find it difficult to concentrate while studying. Even with a textbook open in front of them, their minds may wander to other things. Mobile phones, social media and constant notifications can make it even harder to stay focused.

The good news is that concentration can improve with practice. By developing a few simple habits, students can make their study time more effective and less stressful.

Take short breaks
Studying continuously for hours can be tiring. Instead, try studying for 20 to 25 minutes, followed by a five-minute break. During the break, get up, walk around, drink some water or do a few gentle stretches. A short break can help you feel refreshed and ready to continue.

Remember, a break should give your mind a rest, not pull you into another distraction. Avoid scrolling through social media, as a quick check can easily turn into a much longer break.

Train your mind to concentrate

Focus and memory can improve with regular practice. While studying, notice when your thoughts begin to wander. Instead of getting frustrated, gently bring your attention back to the lesson.

You can also try simple puzzles, memory games or activities that require careful observation. However, the most useful practice is to concentrate on one task at a time and gradually build your ability to stay focused.

Keep your study space organised
A clean, quiet study area can make concentration easier. Keep only the books, notebooks and stationery you need on your desk. Put your mobile phone away or switch off notifications to reduce distractions.

You do not need an expensive study table or a perfect room. Even a small, organised space can help you settle down and study with fewer interruptions.

Divide lessons into smaller parts
Trying to finish an entire long chapter at once can feel overwhelming. Instead, divide it into smaller sections and set a clear goal for each study session.

For example, complete one topic, revise its main points and then move on to the next. After reading a section, close the book and try to recall what you have learned. This helps you check your understanding rather than simply rereading the same information.

If a topic seems difficult, discuss it with a friend or ask your teacher for clarification. Explaining an idea in your own words can also help you understand it better.

Build a regular study routine
Studying at a consistent time each day can help you develop a habit. Choose a time when you feel reasonably alert, get enough sleep and avoid leaving all your revision until the last minute.

The key to better concentration is not studying for longer hours, but making the hours you study more meaningful. Start with small changes, practise them regularly and give yourself time to improve. Over time, these habits can help you become a more confident and independent learner.
