Tirupur: The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, inaugurated the extended 'Pudhumai Penn' scheme in Tuticorin.
Under this initiative, girl students from economically disadvantaged families pursuing higher education receive ₹1,000 monthly financial assistance.
A celebratory event was held at Kumaran Women's College in Tirupur, presided over by Collector Kristuraj. MLA Selvaraj and Mayor Dinesh Kumar were also present.
During the event, debit cards were distributed to beneficiary students by Minister Kayalvizhi Selvaraj.
Speaking at the occasion, the minister highlighted the scheme's impact. A total of 10,651 students from 68 colleges in Tirupur district benefit from the Tamil Nadu Puthumai Penn initiative, while 7,047 students from 43 colleges are supported through the Tamil Puthalvan scheme.
The expansion of the Pudhumai Penn scheme will now benefit 1,687 additional female students studying across 52 colleges.
The initiative aims to ensure higher education for girls from economically weaker sections, reduce school and college dropout rates, and prevent child marriages.
Corporation Commissioner Ramamurthy, Deputy Mayor Balasubramaniam, and other dignitaries participated in the event.
The scheme underscores the state government's commitment to empowering young women through education and addressing socio-economic challenges.
