Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) inaugurated the AMOLED Research Centre (ARC) on December 21, 2024, aimed at advancing the development of next-generation AMOLED displays.

The centre, funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), DRDO, and Tata Sons, will focus on creating displays for smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and other wearable devices.

In his inaugural speech, Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, emphasized the centre's role in bolstering India's display manufacturing industry, stating that the ARC will innovate in AMOLED display production using a speed-based modular micro-factory approach.

He also highlighted the development of OLED lighting and organic photovoltaic power sources for mobile phones.

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, noted that the ARC is set to position India as a leader in AMOLED technology, with the global AMOLED display market valued at USD 15 billion. Dr. Debdutta Ray, Principal Investigator of ARC, explained the centre's novel approach to display fabrication, focusing on reducing manufacturing costs through a micro-factory model and "economies-of-speed."

The ARC, equipped with state-of-the-art cleanrooms and fabrication systems, is a pioneering initiative in India's pursuit of self-reliance and innovation in semiconductor and display manufacturing.
