Delhi: Indian Railways has emerged as a cornerstone of India's sports ecosystem, nurturing over 9,000 athletes across 29 disciplines and driving success nationally and internationally.
Since its establishment in 1928, the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) has played a pivotal role in fostering talent across the country. Initially focused on Hockey, Athletics, and Tennis, RSPB has expanded its ambit to include 29 game disciplines, comprising 18 individual and 11 team events.
Affiliated with 28 National Sports Federations and the World Railways Sports Association (USIC), RSPB ensures robust support for its athletes.
The National Sports Awards 2024, announced by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, bring further glory to Indian Railways. Out of 32 Arjuna Awardees this year, five are Railways athletes:
Ms. Jyothi Yarraji (South Central Railway) - Athletics, 100m Hurdles
Ms. Annu Rani (Patiala Locomotive Workshop) - Athletics, Javelin Throw
Ms. Salima Tete (South Eastern Railway) - Hockey
Mr. Swapnil Suresh Kusale (Central Railway) - Shooting, 50m 3P
Mr. Aman (Northern Railway) - Wrestling, 57kg Freestyle
These accolades add to Indian Railways' impressive tally of 183 Arjuna, 28 Padma Shri, 12 Dhyan Chand, 13 Dronacharya, and 9 Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Awards—making it India's most decorated sports organization.
The awardees will be honored by the President of India during a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 17, 2025. Indian Railways continues to champion the spirit of sportsmanship, providing job security and fostering excellence for India's athletes.
