During the Indian freedom struggle, numerous newspapers emerged to inspire a sense of independence among the people. Figures like Gandhi, Rajaram Mohan Roy, and Bharathiyar were key editors who published many propaganda magazines. Post-independence, the role of newspapers evolved to primarily convey information and news to the public.

Initially, newspapers focused on disseminating government information, political news, and national events. However, T.V. Ramasbhaiyar, the founder of Dinamalar, revolutionized this approach. He redirected journalistic focus towards highlighting societal problems, basic grievances, and development needs, aiming to bring these issues to the government's attention.

A Tool for Development

By the 1970s, newspapers in Western countries began voicing the people's grievances and needs. However, TVR had already initiated and achieved this transformation between 1955-1960. He envisioned journalism as a tool for people's development. Today, newspapers and televisions extensively cover people's problems and basic needs, a practice pioneered by TVR.

Journalism, the study of newspapers, news, and media, has modernized into a theory of journalism for development. This concept entails participating in the social, economic, and cultural development of people through news publication, thereby becoming a cornerstone for national development.

Even without formal journalism courses, TVR laid the foundation for this modern theory, making him a visionary in the field. His core journalistic work involved publishing the needs of the people, bringing them to the rulers' attention, and finding solutions, believing it was the newspaper's duty to aid the country's development.

A Medium of Communication

In an era devoid of modern media, TVR transformed Dinamalar into a communication bridge between the people and the government, greatly benefiting the Tamil community. He emphasized local news and people's problems, drawing the attention of the rulers.

While other newspapers brought global news to local areas, he aimed to bring local news to the world. He believed news should help people live better lives. He instructed reporters to focus on village news, highlighting the need for basic amenities like drinking water, street lights, sanitation, roads, bus facilities, schools, and hospitals.

His messages were visionary, often providing solutions. For example, his suggestion to bring water from the Tamiraparani borehole to solve Kovilpatti's water crisis was accepted by the government. TVR played a crucial role in many successful projects, such as today's drinking water schemes.

Impactful Reporting

In 1975, TVR's reporting on the sandstorm disaster in Usilampatti to Bodi, which devastated agricultural lands and wells, mobilized government aid for farmers. He emphasized the importance of such essential messages over sensational news.

TVR's achievements include raising awareness about environmental conservation, leading to actions by public officials. His series on protecting ponds influenced significant governmental measures. His role in the development of Tuticorin port and addressing Ramanathapuram's famine further exemplifies his impact.

Legacy and Influence

TVR's advocacy for infrastructure improvements, such as the Tirunelveli - Kanyakumari - Thiruvananthapuram railway line, demonstrated his influence. His efforts ensured that newspapers could effectively communicate public concerns to the government. This legacy continues today, with Dinamalar remaining a leading newspaper.

TVR's vision and dedication to journalism for development have left an enduring mark, ensuring that the press continues to serve as a vital tool for societal progress.
