Strengthening forensic infrastructure in India

Delhi: India currently has 7 Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs) under the Directorate of Forensic Science Services, located in Bhopal, Chandigarh, Kamrup, Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi, and Kolkata. Additionally, there are 32 State Forensic Science Laboratories (State FSLs) and 97 Regional Forensic Science Laboratories (Regional FSLs) nationwide.
The government is committed to bolstering forensic science infrastructure through a continuous process based on gap analysis and demand assessment. Since "Police" and "Public Order" are State subjects, the responsibility for forensic facilities primarily rests with individual States and Union Territories.
Key Initiatives by the Central Government
Expansion and Modernization:
Three new CFSLs have been established in Bhopal, Guwahati, and Pune.
The Kolkata CFSL has undergone modernization.
A state-of-the-art DNA Analysis and R&D Facility has been set up in Chandigarh.
Cyber Forensics:
A National Cyber Forensic Laboratory (NCFL) has been established in Hyderabad.
Approval for six additional NCFLs across the country has been granted with a total outlay of ₹126.84 crore.
Capacity Building:
Training for 32,524 Investigating Officers, Prosecutors, and Medical Officers in DNA evidence handling.
Distribution of 18,020 Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kits.
Funding and Support:
₹245.29 crore approved for State/UT projects, with ₹185.28 crore disbursed.
Modernization of forensic laboratories and procurement of 433 mobile forensic vans under the ₹2080.5 crore "Modernization of Forensic Capacities" scheme.
