Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has declared 23 public holidays for 2025, with three of them falling on Sundays and two on Saturdays.
All government offices, state-run public sector undertakings, corporations, and boards will remain closed on these public holidays, as well as on all Saturdays and Sundays.
In 2025, the total number of holidays will be one less than in 2024, as Vijayadashami coincides with Gandhi Jayanti on October 2.
The Pongal festival is set for Tuesday, January 14, 2025, while the preceding Saturday and Sunday (January 11 and 12) are regular holidays. The Bogi festival on January 13 is likely to be declared a holiday. If not, taking leave on January 13 would create a six-day holiday streak from January 11 to 16.
If the government additionally declares January 17 (Friday) as a holiday, it could result in a nine-day break for Pongal celebrations.
Other important holidays include:
Ramadan: Monday, March 31
Tamil New Year: Monday, April 14
Good Friday: Friday, April 18
Independence Day: Friday, August 15
Milad-an-Nabi: Friday, September 5
Diwali: Monday, October 20
Many holidays falling close to weekends in 2025 will offer extended breaks, providing ample opportunities for festive celebrations and travel.
