International students in the U.S. benefit from Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT), which provide crucial work opportunities after graduation.

However, policy changes under the Trump administration could put these programs in jeopardy.

OPT allows F-1 visa holders to work in their field for up to 12 months, with an additional 24-month extension for STEM graduates. Critics argue that the program lacks oversight and is prone to misuse, with reports of fake institutions exploiting the system.

A congressional report has called for stricter regulations on schools issuing I-20 student visas and proposed penalizing institutions with high visa overstay rates.

The U.S. has long struggled with student visa overstays, particularly among F-1 and M-1 holders.

In 2023, India recorded the highest number of overstays (7,000), followed by Brazil, China, and Colombia.

Critics claim OPT displaces American graduates, with estimates suggesting its elimination could lead to 443,000 job losses over a decade.

If stricter policies are enforced, international students may face tougher visa requirements, affecting their post-graduation work prospects.

Given these uncertainties, students planning to study or work in the U.S. must closely monitor immigration policy changes.
