Coimbatore: With nearly 33,000 students in government and private schools lacking Aadhaar numbers, there is growing demand for special Aadhaar enrollment and update camps to be conducted on school campuses.
A total of 5,89,561 students study in government, aided, and private schools across the district. Of them, 33,000 do not possess Aadhaar numbers, while 51,370 students have not updated their Aadhaar biometrics.
Aadhaar is essential for availing central and state government educational scholarships and for opening student bank accounts. The authorities have also made Aadhaar updates mandatory for students aged 5-7 and 15-17.
Further, while uploading student data to the Central Government's Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE), admission is confirmed only if four Aadhaar details—name, number, date of birth, and gender—match exactly with school records.
Currently, parents and students are visiting e-service centres for Aadhaar corrections, but long queues and delays have caused difficulties. Although updates can be done through post, parents have urged the authorities to organise special Aadhaar camps in all schools to meet the high demand and avoid further inconvenience.
