New Delhi: Artificial intelligence (AI) has created more jobs than it has eliminated in India, according to a recent study, challenging concerns that the rapid adoption of AI could lead to widespread job losses.

Fears over AI-driven unemployment have persisted for several years. However, recent data suggest that the technology is also generating significant employment opportunities across several sectors.

The study was conducted by Nomura Holdings Inc, a leading global financial services and investment banking company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

According to a report released by Nomura Holdings after analysing developments across Asia from 2022 to August 2026, 31,921 job losses in India during the period were attributed to the impact of AI.

A significant share of these job losses was linked to the adoption of AI-powered chatbots, which are increasingly being used to handle customer support and other routine functions.

At the same time, AI contributed to the creation of 83,100 jobs in India during the same period — more than twice the number of jobs lost.

Most of the new employment opportunities were reportedly created for graduates in the information technology (IT) services sector, with companies explicitly attributing the hiring to their adoption and expansion of AI-related technologies.

Demand rising for AI-skilled workforce
The study also points to a growing demand for employees with greater experience in AI and related technologies in countries such as India and South Korea.

Nomura said the trend is also becoming increasingly evident in major economies and in the Philippines, where the labour market plays a significant role in the country's economy.

The findings indicate that while AI is replacing certain routine and repetitive roles, it is simultaneously creating demand for new skills and occupations, particularly among workers with expertise in technology and AI-enabled systems.

The study, therefore, suggests that the impact of AI on employment may be more complex than simply resulting in job losses, with new opportunities emerging alongside the transformation of existing jobs.
