Madurai: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Madurai, conducted a two-day residential training programme titled Learning Science via Standards for science teachers associated with BIS Standards Clubs. Held at Poppys Hotel on June 18 and 19, the programme trained 47 teachers from government schools and colleges across Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Perambalur, Sivaganga, Tenkasi, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Virudhunagar districts.

Shri S.D. Dayanand, Senior Director and Head, BIS Madurai, inaugurated the session, highlighting the initiative's goal of simplifying scientific concepts through 52 structured lesson plans. He urged teachers to adopt these modules to foster scientific thinking among students.

Joint Director Shri A. Arivazhagan elaborated on BIS's standardization and certification work and demonstrated the BIS Care App's features for consumer protection. Smt. Hemalatha P Panicker, also Joint Director, detailed BIS's standard promotion efforts and the role of Standards Clubs in bridging academia and quality standards.

On the first day, participants explored BIS's core functions, the BIS Care App, and the importance of quality awareness. Dr. V. Arun from Anna University's Madurai campus conducted sessions on practical lesson plans focusing on products like LPG stoves and packaged milk.

Day two featured a workshop where teachers identified scientific principles behind everyday products. A visit to CIPET, Madurai, provided insights into product testing.

Since 2021, BIS has formed over 10,000 Standards Clubs nationwide, including 345 in Southern Tamil Nadu, to promote consumer awareness and quality culture among students.
