New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the establishment of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) under the civil sector, with an estimated outlay of over Rs. 5,862 crore over nine years (2026-27 onwards).
The funding includes Rs. 2,585 crore for capital expenditure and Rs. 3,277 crore for operational costs.
For the first time, these KVs will include Balvatikas, offering a three-year foundational stage as part of NEP 2020 implementation. This initiative aims to meet the educational needs of children of Central Government employees and expand KVs into underserved and strategic regions.
Currently, India has 1,288 functional KVs, including three abroad (Moscow, Kathmandu, Tehran), with a total enrollment of approximately 13.62 lakh students. Of the 57 new KVs, 20 will be in districts without existing KVs, 14 in aspirational districts, 4 in LWE-affected areas, and 5 in NER/hilly regions. These schools will benefit around 86,640 students and generate 4,617 direct permanent jobs, with additional employment from construction and allied activities.
KVs are recognized for high-quality teaching, innovative pedagogy, and strong CBSE performance. The new expansion ensures balanced regional coverage, strengthens inclusivity, and promotes national integration, reinforcing KVs as model schools for quality education nationwide.
