Chennai: Chief Minister M.K. Stalin advised students not to mistake the content they see on social media as real life and cautioned them against choosing Instagram personalities as role models.
Addressing the centenary celebrations of Good Shepherd School in Chennai, Stalin reflected on the historical struggle for education, stating, “Once upon a time, education was denied to us. After many struggles, the doors of education were opened. Even today, there are people still fighting for education.”
Highlighting the State government's initiatives to promote learning, he said several schemes such as the breakfast programme, Naan Mudhalvan (I am the First), and Tamizh Pudhalvan have been implemented, along with special buses for school students.
Expressing concern over the spread of divisive ideologies, Stalin said, “At the national level, hatred is being propagated in many states. Our government opposes such forces. Minorities in India are facing an unprecedented crisis, but this is not permanent. Attempts to destroy religious harmony will not succeed.”
He urged schools to foster equality among students, regardless of caste and religion, saying Tamil Nadu can remain a land of equality and brotherhood only if children grow up with such values.
Stalin also stressed that advancements in science and technology, including Artificial Intelligence, should be used for progress and not for distorting thinking. “Students should not wonder why they need to study. Every invention must be used for development,” he said.
On the influence of social media, he remarked, “Entertainment is a part of life, not life itself. Students should not believe that all the reels they watch are reality. There is no point in getting likes and views—the real achievement lies in marks and degrees.”
