New Delhi: University of Delhi has imposed a month-long ban on public meetings, processions, demonstrations and protests on its campus, citing concerns over obstruction of traffic, safety threats and disturbance of public peace.
In an order dated February 17, the proctor's office said inputs suggested that “unrestricted public gatherings” could escalate and impact law and order. The directive also referred to instructions from the assistant commissioner of police, Civil Lines, prohibiting assemblies, slogan-shouting and carrying of torches or similar materials that may affect public tranquillity.
Proctor Manoj Kumar said past protests had at times spiralled out of control, leading to deterioration of law and order.
The order prohibits assembly of five or more persons, slogan-shouting and carrying hazardous materials, and takes immediate effect for one month.
Associate professor Mithuraj Dhusiya termed the move a “blanket clampdown” and sought its withdrawal. The decision follows recent clashes between student groups and two FIRs registered by police.
