New Delhi: The Executive Council (EC) of University of Delhi is set to consider key proposals on restructuring BA Programme courses and major infrastructure projects at its meeting scheduled next week.

According to the agenda, the council will review recommendations of the Academic Council made on April 15 regarding realignment of disciplines and course combinations across colleges for the 2026-27 academic session. The move aims to optimise seat utilisation and improve academic offerings.

A committee comprising senior university officials, including the Dean of Colleges, Registrar and principals of institutions such as Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Miranda House and Daulat Ram College, has recommended reviewing low-demand subjects and merging them into broader combinations.

The proposal suggests pairing disciplines like Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Bengali and Telugu with other subjects, while areas such as Social Work, Sociology and Education may be combined with more popular courses to enhance viability.

It also recommends revisiting certain subjects, including Office Management and Secretarial Practice (OMSP) and AMSP, with suggestions to replace them with Commerce in BA combinations. Subjects like Food Technology and Human Development and Family Empowerment (HDFE) may be merged under a broader “Community Science” discipline.

The document clarifies that while colleges cannot change the total sanctioned intake, they may adjust seat distribution within programmes if adequate faculty and infrastructure are available. No new programmes will be introduced, and none will be discontinued as part of the exercise.

If approved, the restructuring will be implemented from the 2026-27 academic session.

The EC will also consider infrastructure proposals, including an in-principle approval of Rs 174.20 crore for a new building of the Institute of Nano Medical Sciences at Maurice Nagar, and a revised estimate of Rs 233.35 crore for studio apartments at Dhaka Complex, partly funded through a HEFA loan.

Additionally, modifications to plans for two academic blocks at the Delhi School of Economics will be taken up, factoring in reduced tree felling while retaining the approved cost framework.
