Addressing a national seminar on Technical Teachers Quality Improvement in Chennai, AICTE chairman R.A.Yadav said that the Justice Ranganath Misra Committee, which was deliberating on the fee structure over the last year in consultation with various stakeholders, was expected to submit its report in the next two months.
“In a society where a large number of people aspire for higher education, the fee structure should not be a constraint on ordinary people,†Dr. yadav said.
'The disadvantaged sections of society must have access to higher education. It was important for self-financing colleges to be able to charge fees that would make them financially viable and able to provide quality infrastructure and faculty in accordance with AICTE norms. This was especially important in the light of the Sixth Pay Commission, which would serve to hike faculty salaries,' Dr.Yadav added.
Higher Education secretary K.Ganesan said the State would accept the AICTE committee’s recommendations if they became Central legislation. For now, however, the State's self-financing engineering colleges must adhere to the fee structure to be fixed by the Justice N.V.Balasubramanian Committee. Its report would be announced before counselling begins in July.
