Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University has introduced four alternative methods for B.Ed. students in place of the mandatory 'self-study' course under the Swayam online learning platform, following concerns over difficulties faced by rural students.

The university, which oversees five government colleges, 14 aided institutions and 662 self-financed colleges, has implemented the Choice Based Credit System for M.Ed. courses since 2020-21 and for B.Ed. courses since 2021-22. Under the system, B.Ed. students were required to complete Swayam online courses and secure at least 40 per cent marks to earn 20 marks in semester examinations.

However, students from rural areas faced challenges due to limited internet access and distant examination centres, including in neighbouring states, leading to protests and repeated appeals for alternatives.

Responding to these concerns, the university has approved four new options, including record-based work on yoga, health and physical education, and educational technology, along with approved online courses.

Students opting for these alternatives and clearing the assessment will receive 20 marks. University officials said the move, cleared by the academic committee and Senate, would benefit thousands of students.
