Surat: Two Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) students of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University were caught using smartwatches equipped with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool to cheat during their semester examination, officials said on Friday.
The incident, reported on Wednesday, is believed to be the first in Gujarat where students attempted to use AI-enabled wearable devices to obtain live answers in an exam. Vice-Chancellor Kishorsinh Chavda said the supervisor at the exam centre grew suspicious after noticing a male and a female student repeatedly looking at their smartwatches and making unusual movements.
A check revealed that both students were receiving real-time answers from an AI application installed on their devices. The university later imposed a fine of ₹5,000 each for the malpractice.
Following the episode, the university issued fresh guidelines prohibiting students from carrying any electronic or communication gadgets capable of internet connectivity into exam halls. Mobile phones were already barred, but the new rules extend the ban to smartwatches, earbuds, electronic pens, rings and similar devices, Chavda said.
