New Delhi: Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) will introduce a fellowship programme from the next academic session to enable journalists to specialise in emerging fields such as technology, economy, and strategy, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the institute's 57th convocation, Vaishnaw said the programme aims to help journalists deepen their domain knowledge and strengthen research capabilities in specialised sectors.

“We have seen globally that journalists get opportunities to specialise in fields like technology and economy. From the next session, IIMC will offer such fellowships to enhance their expertise,” he said.

Describing IIMC as one of India's premier media institutions, the minister noted its strong placement record and growing relevance in the evolving media landscape.

He also highlighted infrastructure expansion at the New Delhi campus, including the foundation stone laying of a new academic block and the establishment of a startup incubator.

Vaishnaw said technology, particularly artificial intelligence and social media, has transformed mass communication, enabling content creation and dissemination with minimal resources.

He encouraged students to contribute to nation-building and play an active role in achieving India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
