Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) hosted the 7th International Conference in Ocean Engineering (ICOE 2025) from September 14 to 18, bringing together global experts to deliberate on ocean technology, marine renewable energy, offshore structures and the blue economy.

Organised by the Department of Ocean Engineering, the five-day conference featured keynote lectures, over 100 peer-reviewed technical paper presentations, panel discussions, industry exhibitions, and sessions for early-career researchers and students.

According to the organisers, the conference produced policy and industry recommendations for India's blue economy roadmap, showcased technology demonstrations on subsea systems and renewable energy, strengthened international collaborations and startup engagements, and enhanced India's visibility as a hub for sustainable ocean development.

Addressing the conference, NIOT Director R. Balaji said India was making rapid strides in ocean technology, while DRDO scientists Manu Korulla and Duvvuri Seshagiri underlined the sector's strategic importance for national security, technological self-reliance, and resilient offshore systems.

ICOE 2025 saw participation from universities, research institutions, industries and government agencies worldwide. Key themes included offshore structures, ocean energy, coastal processes, marine robotics, AI applications, and subsea technology.

Prof Abdus Samad, Head of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras and organising chair, said the conference served as a platform for integrating research with real-world challenges in oceans and for advancing India's leadership in ocean engineering.

ICOE, initiated by IIT Madras in 2009, has grown into a leading international forum in the field, with participation from over 25 countries in previous editions.
