Shimla: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has become the first premier institution in the country to introduce a dedicated B Tech programme in Quantum Science and Engineering, officials said on Monday.

The institute has also launched two new undergraduate programmes — B Tech in Agricultural Engineering with Data Analytics and B Tech in Chemical Engineering with Data Analytics.

According to institute officials, the programmes have been designed to combine core engineering principles with artificial intelligence, data analytics, research and industry exposure, preparing students for emerging technological challenges and future-oriented careers.

The B Tech programme in Quantum Science and Engineering will focus on quantum computing, quantum communication, sensing technologies, materials science and hardware engineering. The curriculum also integrates computer science, mathematics and artificial intelligence, with the aim of training the next generation of quantum engineers.

Officials said graduates of the programme would be equipped for careers in areas such as secure communications, quantum hardware development and advanced computing.

The B Tech programme in Agricultural Engineering with Data Analytics combines conventional agricultural engineering with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), remote sensing, automation and data analytics.

Students enrolled in the programme will receive practical exposure through laboratory work, field training, internships, research projects and collaborations with agri-tech companies and start-ups. The course aims to develop professionals capable of contributing to precision farming, sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient food systems.

The institute has also introduced a B Tech programme in Chemical Engineering with Data Analytics under its School of Chemical Sciences. The curriculum integrates core chemical engineering concepts with computational modelling, process simulation, machine learning and data science.

Students in the new programmes will have the option to pursue minors or double majors across engineering, science, humanities and management disciplines, enabling them to explore a wider range of career opportunities, officials added.
