Madurai: Acute shortage of psychiatrists has become a cause of great concern, with mental illness on the rise especially among students and techies, health secretary V.K.Subburaj said.
Speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of the department of psychiatry at the Government Rajaji Hospital, Mr Subburaj said only 4000 psychiatrists were available in the entire country whereas at least 100,000 specialists were needed. 'There is an acute shortage of psychiatrists. For every one million population, there are only three specialists in the country,' he said.
According to Subburaj, Tamil Nadu has only 350 psychiatrists and it would take several years to meet the current demand.
Pointing out that five crore people were suffering from psychiatric illness in the country, he said one crore among them required hospitalisation. But there were only 20,000 beds for them.
Depression caused by excess pressure at studies and failure in examinations have become prevalent among the student community.
IT workers too suffered from depression due to workload, he said. Urging the mental health specialists to serve in rural areas, he said the government’s mental health programme implemented in 14 districts would be extended to other districts shortly.
Mental health programme state coordinator Dr C.Ramasubramanian said the Madurai nodal centre was imparting training for all doctors under its jurisdiction to treat patients with mental illness.
