Vellore: The Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, has successfully performed India's first implantation of a motorised Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) system — the Vitaflow Liberty — marking a major advance in the country's cardiovascular care.
The procedure was carried out by Dr John Jose, Professor and Head of Cardiology (Unit II), on an 82-year-old woman suffering from severe aortic stenosis. The Vitaflow Liberty system, developed by MicroPort, is the world's first motorised TAVR delivery platform and enables smoother, more controlled and highly precise valve deployment.
CMC said this is the first time a motorised TAVR system has been used on a patient in India, signalling a new phase of enhanced accuracy and safety in structural heart interventions. Under Dr Jose's leadership, the team has so far implanted the Vitaflow Liberty system in four patients, all of whom are reported to be recovering well.
With more than 400 TAVR implants and over 10,000 valve procedures performed over the years, CMC Vellore said the achievement reinforces its position as a national leader in complex cardiac procedures and its commitment to bringing cutting-edge global technologies to Indian patients.
