New Delhi: Sakina Bharmal, a Global Perspectives teacher from India, has been named the South Asia regional winner of the 2025 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards, Cambridge University Press & Assessment announced on Wednesday.

Bharmal, who has taught for 25 years, currently handles Cambridge IGCSE and AS Level Global Perspectives. She was recognised for inspiring students to take meaningful action on global issues, notably guiding them through a project on HIV and AIDS. Students researched the condition, engaged with affected individuals, and published a book, with proceeds supporting children living with or affected by HIV.

"This recognition is not mine alone. It belongs to every student who chose to question, care, and act purposefully," said Bharmal. "Global issues are not just distant headlines—they're here, calling us to respond with empathy and courage."

As one of nine global regional winners, Bharmal will receive £500 worth of books for her class, a trophy, and feature in a 'Thank you' page across Cambridge textbooks. She will also gain national and international visibility for her school throughout the year.

Rod Smith, Managing Director of International Education at Cambridge, lauded Bharmal's achievement, saying, “In a world where AI dominates headlines, teachers like Sakina bring humanity, empathy and creativity into the classroom. Technology can't replace that.”

The awards received over 5,000 nominations from 101 countries this year. The public can vote for Bharmal or other regional winners to become the global winner by visiting dedicatedteacher.cambridge.org/vote by April 30. The global winner will be announced on May 21.

The annual Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Awards honour exceptional teachers worldwide for their impact on students' education and personal growth.
